His fur looks most like that of an English pointer even though he may have another breed in his blood. I’m just not familiar with all those doggie brushes.
You will need a medium stiffness wire slicker brush, a de-shedding rake (the shedding blade designed for horses is used on short coated breeds of dog) The furminator is also a excellent product,it is also expensive(about $50 – $60 for the size you would want to get) and you can injure the dog if you don’t know how to use it correctly.A metal comb is also going to be helpful to you and maybe even a leave-on spray coat conditioner/detangler.Don’t forget your local Groomer if you need more help.Check out Pet Edge.com or your local animal store.

Furminator is the best thing you can get!

There are de-shedding blades that your can buy at your local pet store. They were originally used for horses, but work really well on short-haired dogs. A quick groom with one of these will remove any dead hair, as well as make his coat smooth and shiny. When he is actually shedding, you will be able to get most of the shedding over with in 1-2 days, instead of up to a week. My cousin uses this on her German Shorthaired Pointer, and it works really well.

You should probably have more than one kind of brush if you can. A shedding blade and a double sided-brush, one side soft bristled and one side hard bristled.

I agree that it’s probably best to have more than one type of brush. The slicker brush is great for removing undercoat and loose hair. I also like a bristle brush for my shorter haired dog as it feels good to him and makes his coat shiny. The rubber brushes (ie Kong Zoom Groom) also remove tons of loose hair. I don’t feel that the Furminator is that effective on my short haired dog.
I use the Furminator, slicker brush, pin brushes and undercoat rakes on my Aussies.
If I could only have one brush, I would probably choose the slicker brush because it works great on both my long-haired and short-haired dogs.
