What Is the Temper of a German Wirehaired Pointer?

I’m planning on getting a German Wirehaired Pointer and would like to know the general temper of the breed. Help would be greatly thanked.

I have a german wirehaired pointer. I found her in the local pound when she was about 8 months old. That was 7 years ago. They can be stubborn but soft so heavy handed training techniques doesn’t work on them very well. I have found mine to be very loyal with a great sense of humor. They can be quite independent especially in the field but they don’t range as far as german shorthairs or english pointers. They are very versatile as being quite good in upland and water fowl hunting as well as in other dog sports like agility. Some can be quite sharp when it comes to cats and other furry animals. So be careful if you have cats especially with a rescue. Some GWPs are cat killers.

You should research this before you decide on a breed.

Contact a breeder and discuss it with her.

each dog can be very different…it depends how they are raised. my parents own a shorthaired pointer that is extremely calm…except when i come around.

Same as a GSP (german shorthair), but it depends on what lines. Show or working? I own a working. She is very athletic, hard headed, and sweet. She wags her tail for no reason and sometimes is off in space.

Show lines tend to be very shy and hyper.

German Wirehaired Pointers are hard workers and need a job to do, especially if its hunting. I would not recommend this breed to someone who doesn’t have a lot of acres for it to run around and lots of time to take it for long walks. These dogs are smart but stubborn and often require patient training.

They are VERY playful and the one I have loves toys. They are very sweet, good with strangers if trained properly. Train them early though, they tend to get into things if they get bored. At least, mine does.Make sure you have plenty of time for them, they never tire out. I have a twelve-year-old German Wirehaired pointer and she still acts like a puppy.

This brings back memories. I had one 25 years ago and he had A Lot of energy. I could throw a stick into the thick bush and he could always retrieve it. We live on 4 fenced acres with a pond and he would swim out to try to get the muskrat or the ducks. He chased our cats constantly. As far as dog shows go he was a champion and once won a specialty with 40 other dogs. Boy did I love him….he was so loyal. Good luck
