Is It Safe to Use a Laser Pointer When Playing With Cats?

I've discovered that our cats go nuts over my laser pointer.

It's now the preferred toy, all others are boring (apparantly).

I have concerns as to whether it's safe or not though.

I don't shine it on them or anything, they just chase after the dot.

Is there any way that doing that could damage their eyes?

Thanks

Well, 5 out of my 6 cats LOVE to chase the dot. Also, my two small dogs go nuts over it as well. Just be careful not to shine it into their eyes, and watch for reflections off of shiny surfaces. Sometimes, when the floor is shiny or very smooth it could reflect and get into their eyed.

Have fun. One fun thing to do, is run the dot along the floor and then make it appear as though it went under something, like the couch. Then just sit back and laugh yourself silly, watching them trying to get the dot out from under there. ((Grin))

it can damage their eyes! but you can still use it to play with them. If they just stare at it while on the wall its fine. If they look right at the pointer in your hand its not good.

Cats love laser pointers! They're a classic. Don't worry, it wont hurt them. Just don't point it at their eyes. Even if you point it AT them (like, on their back, or paws) it won't hurt them. Try it and watch them try to smack themselves. It's quite cute.

It is what my vet recommended to help my cat get exercise and maintain a healthy weight. I would agree shining it in their eyes ( or anyone else's) can be potentially damaging. My cats love it too.

Shine it that they are always looking AWAY from the pointer, not towards. It can blind them.

We have something called a "Laser Mouse" that we got at a cat show. It's basically the same as the laser pointer, but with much lower power. Yes, you do have to be careful about not shining it in their eyes, but it is a wonderful way to help them get their exercise.

They sell these for cats. Mine go totally crazy for it, too. Actually, somebody else on Yahoo told me to get it, and I'm glad I did. It's so much fun!
