How Can I Get My Pointer to Stop Wandering on My Laptop?

The pointer moves around without any input from me. It does not do this all the time just out of the blue. Somtimes I can not get it out of a corner on screen. Any suggestions. Thanks!
The unwanted input is coming from the little blue joystick in the center of my key board. Can I disable this device and keep my touchpad working? If so how is this done. Thankyou.

if you're using an optical mouse, change your mousepad and/or your mouse. the mousepad must be a detailed, non-reflective surface

click on start and then control panel. Select the mouse switch to classic view if you are on category view. Look for the mouse Icon (Labelled mouse) in there you can disable the pointer
