There are many people out there that breed Pointers but who do not care about the dogs at all and they do not concern themselves with their welfare. Pointers are just one breed of dog that finds itself in very severe circumstances at times. Sometimes they have been abandoned, or perhaps the owner was unable to continue to care for them. Pointer rescue shelters are there for these dogs when nobody else is.
Finding a reputable Pointer rescue shelter is easy provided that you know what you should look for. There are certain key points to look out for in a good shelter and if these points are not met that shelter is best avoided. The last thing any animal lover should want to do is support shelters and rescue groups that have questionable, if not downright, bad practices.
A reputable Pointer rescue group or shelter will always seek to put the animal’s needs first. These organizations are usually staffed by volunteers who sincerely love the dogs that they care for. Some of them do not have the facilities to keep the dogs that they deal with and so oftentimes the volunteers will take the dogs into their homes to live with them and their families. While in their care they will determine the dog’s character and temperament. If need be they will ensure that the dog is seen by an equally reputable vet with whom they have an ongoing working relationship. In such cases the volunteer might even pay the vet bill out of their own pocket. These people are truly dedicated and only want what is best for the dog concerned.
Some of these organizations have very strict policies. So much so that many people have said that it almost seems to be more difficult to adopt a dog than it is to adopt a child. While these types of organizations are determined to re-home the dogs in their care only to people who have met their list of criteria it can be a double-edged sword. Very often perfectly good potential owners are turned away because they failed to meet one requirement of the organization. In the long run the dogs suffer.
You will want to be able to visit the Pointer rescue shelter in order to determine the conditions the dogs are living in. Obviously the enclosures and facilities should be clean and comfortable. Remember that in almost all reputable shelters the animals will have been inoculated, neutered and/or spayed and all these costs will be included in the price you will have to pay should you choose to adopt one of the dogs from that particular shelter.
Adopting a dog from a Pointer rescue shelter is a wonderful thing. You will have the added joy of knowing that you have effectively saved the life of another creature. It is a richly rewarding experience and definitely one that should not be dismissed out of hand if you are looking to adopt a Pointer.
