German Shorthaired Pointer Puppies

When you decide that you are ready to make a long term commitment to dog you need to understand that this is something that should never be entered into lightly.  The dog will become a member of your family for anything up to twenty years and so it is vital that you know that the dog you get is healthy.  You will need to make sure that the puppy has been bred by a responsible breeder with a genuine affection for this breed.  Never approach a puppy mill and other types of backyard breeders in order to buy a puppy.  Your best avenue when you want to adopt a German Shorthaired Pointer puppy is approach a qualified breeder who knows exactly what they are doing.

Responsible and reputable breeders will have absolutely no problem with allowing you to view the area where the dogs spend their time.  You will be able to see if it is clean and kept hygienic.  Breeders in this category invariably have the dog as a part of their family and so it is not forced outside and locked in a shelter of some kind or left to find warmth and comfort alone in a kennel.  These breeders would never sell their German Shorthaired puppies through a pet shop for a number of reasons, not least of which is their desire to meet the person the puppy will be bought by so they can determine if that person is a good match or not.

Puppies in their care will be happy, healthy and curious of their surroundings.  New people in the vicinity will be investigated in an eager and friendly manner.  You will soon see if something is amiss if the puppies tend to shy away whenever anyone goes near them.  Reputable breeders always have a good and ongoing relationship with a vet and will be able to offer the necessary documentation to prove that the puppies are in good health and that they have been inoculated.

Breeders know what they are talking about when it comes to the particular requirements for the breed that they are involved with.  They know the required physical traits and temperament of the breed.  They will also be able to tell you about any genetic defects that are synonymous with the breed and you will have the peace of mind knowing that the preceding generations were all tested and confirmed to be free of those defects.  Also, be prepared for the breeder to have some requirements of you as well.  Unless those conditions are met it is highly unlikely that they will consent to sell you one of the puppies.  This is because their affection and concern for the breed is sincere and they do not want to jeopardize the puppy’s wellbeing by selling him to someone who cannot take proper care of him.

By choosing to spend the extra amount and buying your puppy from a reputable breeder you can be assured that the pup was bred under caring and responsible conditions and that they have had the best possible start to life.
