My daughter has been working at the Humane Society for a few months now. She absolutely loves animals and has already convinced me to let her adopt a cat. But what she really wants is a dog…a big dog.

My wife isn’t too thrilled about the prospect of getting a dog. She suspects she’ll end up being the one to potty it (if it’s still a puppy), feed it, and take it for walks during the day. She’s probably right. But you know, this is my daughter we’re talking about. Although I hate to admit, I love giving her what she want. You should have seen her excitement when I agreed to the cat.

My daughter has big plans when it comes to making a home for the dog outside. And she wants me to “help” her build it. You know what that means…I’ll be building it.

I went online to look for plans for a dog kennel. I was very surprised by all the options available. Here are 3 criteria to consider when selecting a dog kennel.

Size

The kennel has to be comfortable for your pet. That means building it big enough for when your dog is full grown. This is especially important if your dog will be spending a lot of time in the kennel. If the kennel is too small, the dog will get bored and develop bad habits from being penned up with no room to move. A too small kennel can be a very an unhealthy environment for a dog too.

Weather Conditions

The plan you chose should allow your dog to enjoy both the sun and shade. Make sure there is plenty of cross ventilation, especially if you live in a hot climate, like I do.

If you live in a place with all 4 seasons, you want to have the flexibility of providing shelter when it’s really cold. Pick something that lets you insulate the kennel with a blanket or straw. You want to protect the dog from harsh winds and extreme cold weather.

Materials

Use materials that can withstand a lot of wear and tear. Be careful about what you use though.

Pressure treated lumber is a great option. But it has been treated with chemicals. So if your dog likes to chew, you want to make sure your dog can’t get to it because the chemicals are harmful to the dog. Only use pressure treated lumber in areas the dog can’t get to.

Another possibility is cedar, which is known to hold up to weather and doesn’t rot, like untreated lumber.

Pick A Plan

As I mentioned earlier, there a lots of options when it comes to dog kennels. Some of the plans have better living conditions that some houses I’ve seen.

I picked a plan that includes a dog run and I think I might tweak the plans some to incorporate some features I saw in other plans. I just need to make sure I don’t get too carried away…after all, we are talking about my daughter…

You can find several easy to follow and understand plans for dog kennels [http://www.HomeWoodworkingKnowHow.info] at [http://www.HomeWoodworkingKnowHow.info]. Not only do they have plans for kennels, but they have plans for all kinds of stuff, like sheds, planters…you name it…over 14,000 woodworking plans and projects. Maybe I’ll throw in a gazebo for a place to hang out with the dog.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Isaiah_Abraham
http://EzineArticles.com/?Dog-Kennel-Plans—3-Criteria-When-Designing-a-Home-For-Your-Daughters-Most-Wanted-Pet&id=3830607

Store bought dog kennels can be expensive. Fortunately, you can build your own. With a little time and effort, you can have an attractive, functional kennel that will last for years to come. And you can do it spending much less money than the store would charge you.

The first step in building a dog kennel is to know what you want. You need to know how many dogs you plan to house. You also need to figure out how much space you need and what you want your dogs to be able to do within the kennel.

Most people build kennels for safety purposes. They want to be able to leave their dogs outside without worrying about accidents. For that, the best option is to build a house with a run for the dog. Generally, you want the run to be about 10 by 20 feet. This can be simply fenced off with a chain link fence.

The house portion can be a simple as a basic, snoopy style doghouse. Some people will recommend you save money by making flat roof out of a piece of plywood or even a tarp. However, if you live anywhere with inclement weather, this is, to say the least, uncomfortable for your dogs. A better option is to make a four walled structure with a sloping roof with shingles in order to keep out the moisture.

As for the style of the doghouse, you can make that as fancy or as simple as you want. Treated pine tends to be the least expensive sort of wood to use, but it tends to wear out faster. If you want a showpiece that lasts, go for redwood or cedar and add decorative elements. You can even paint the house to match your own!

After you decide what you need from your dog kennel, you’ll need to get the right plans to complete your project. Look for plans that are easy to understand. The best, in my opinion, are those that contain both written instructions and illustrations. The illustrations help when you get stuck, and the written instructions prevent any confusion caused by the pictures.

I found it best to get a pack of several different plans. That way, if you change your mind on what you need, you don’t have to go buy an entire new set of blueprints. If you can find a book with plans for multiple projects, you can save a lot of money. That way, you don’t have to buy a new blueprint for every project you want to do.

The best dog kennel plans I’ve found are at http://www.woodworkingdesigns.info. They offer many easy to follow plans for dog kennels, as well as plans for just about any other project you can think of. They also give you a lot of advice in how to actually do the project. It’s really a must have for project and gift ideas.

For more information, please visit the link here.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Todd_Albright
http://EzineArticles.com/?Making-a-Dog-Kennel—Plans-For-Building-Your-Own&id=3642874

If you are interested in building a dog kennel from scratch the first thing you are going to need to do is look at the different dog kennels designs to see which one will suit your dog. If you have more than one dog you may want to consider building a duplex dog kennel that is divided into two separate “apartments” for your dogs if they do not get along with each other well enough to sleep in the same space.

Start with a Plan

Essentially there are only three main types of dog kennel designs of which the duplex is only one. The other two are the classic peaked roof or “Snoopy” kennel and the flat sloping roof model. Now your dogs are really not going to care which one you build for them as long as it does what a kennel should do which is give them a place to shelter out of the weather good or bad.

When you search online for dog kennel designs you are likely to find a plethora of different designs. The first thing you are likely to notice is that no matter how fancy they look in the picture they still fall into one of these three basic categories. You do not have to spend a fortune on a set of fancy plans when all you really need is a simple kennel design that you can build in a few hours. If you are building a duplex your plans should include a way to remove the partition so that your dogs can provide body warmth when it gets really cold.

Beyond the Basics

When you start looking at kennel designs than the basic shell with a roof, your design should include ways to make sure that your dog or dogs are as comfortable as possible. Your dog is a valued member of your family and deserves to be treated like one. While a basic dog kennel might be fine at keeping the rain at bay you can add a few little extras that will turn his kennel into a home.

Whether you live in a hot climate or a cold one, adding a layer of insulation to the roof, walls and floor will make a big difference. Not only will it help you dog stay warm when the cold winds blow, but like your house the insulation will help keep out the summer heat and help him to stay cooler in the summer.

You can add transparent plastic flaps to help keep out the winds during the winter and if you really want to spoil your dog you can add a small fan to one end of the kennel to keep the fresh air flowing in the summer months. Finding the right design for your kennel is not as hard as you think there are plenty of plans available online, it is what you do with these plans that make the difference.

For expert and detailed step by step instructions on how to construct your own dog Kennel visit: Build Your Own Dog Kennel

Buying a Dog Kennel can be quite costly, and you can easily build one for a quarter of the cost of buying…plus you have the satisfaction of knowing that you did it yourself! Check out how to build it now at: Build Your Own Dog Kennel

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Janet_Patrick
http://EzineArticles.com/?Your-Dog-Kennel-Designs—Add-Some-Extras&id=3625070

There are many choices when it comes to a dog kennel. There are also many reasons a person might chose to use one for their pet. Kennels can go by other names such as cages, crates, runs, doghouses, carriers, and pens.

The type of dog kennel you chose will depend on where you will be using it, the size of the canine that will be contained in it and the purpose for which it is needed. Kennels are available for both indoor and outdoor use, so that may be the first question to ask yourself.

If you will need a dog kennel for outdoors, you have some options. If you are going to be outdoors with your pet, maybe you desire a pen. An exercise pen keeps your animal contained while give him some room to run. A pen is made up of panels that are hinged together. You can add or remove panels to change the size. Most will fold flat for east portability. It is best to use these while you are able to supervise your pet as some pets can maneuver out of these when left alone. Another outdoor option is the chain-link run. A run is assembled like a fence, using posts, fasteners, chain link and a hinged gate. A run is going to be more secure than a freestanding pen, so it is the ideal choice if you need to leave your animal unsupervised for any length of time. Another benefit of the run is that you can configure this to any shape or size you desire. You can also buy a kit that contains all the materials for a run of a predetermined size. Doghouses are sometimes called kennels, and although they offer shelter, they do not contain your animal. It is best to use a doghouse in a gated yard or within a run.

Now on to indoor options; an indoor dog kennel typically is either a metal cage or a type of crate. A metal cage is nice for dogs that like to know what is going on at all times. These cages are constructed of heavy-duty wire. They have a door on one or two of the sides to allow for easy access. They also come with a plastic pan that slides in or out of the bottom of the cage. This is nice is your pup has an accident or gets sick as it allows for easy clean up. You simply slide it out, clean up the mess, wash it off and slide it back into the bottom of the cage. Some dogs feel more secure in a den like crate. They prefer the security of a dog kennel that is enclosed. These crates come in two varieties; soft-sided and hard plastic. These crates are usually one piece with either a wire door or a zip up style soft mesh door. The enclosed type are nice for nighttime use as the pup will have the darkness of a den and three secure sides for a feeling of safety, yet he will still be able to see out.

You can find a dog kennel at many online retailers or at your local pet store. Price depends on the size and variety that you choose.

The Dog Kennel 101 [http://dogkennel101.com/] blog is a great source of information on this topic. Dog kennels [http://dogkennel101.com/dog-kennel-safety-for-your-dog-and-convenience-for-you.html] are a necessity for the owner of any pooch, no matter how young or old.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Karl_Greskee
http://EzineArticles.com/?Dog-Kennels—A-Safety-Precaution-For-Pets&id=3880356

Dog kennels are definitely a great way to provide safety and security for your pet. However, they should never be considered as their permanent living quarters.

Keeping an energetic animal in a confined space for prolonged periods of time without enough exercise will surely make them unhealthy. Without proper exercise you will not only end up with an obese pet, but it will also restrict the growth and development of muscle and might lead to serious health issues affecting their cardiovascular and kidney functions and even their movement and digestion.

Another drawback is that, by keeping more than one dog in an enclosed space for long periods, you increase the chances of a highly contagious condition called kennel cough which can spread to any animal that comes in contact with the affected dog if proper treatment is not given.

On the other hand, dog kennels are excellent means of keeping your dog in comfort and safety if they are used wisely by following a few easy but essential guidelines. Make sure that the kennel is kept clean and sanitized at all times. The size of the kennel will depend on the size and number of dogs you plan to house in the kennel. A kennel should provide sufficient and comfortable space for your pet(s) to move about freely.

There are numerous types of kennels that come in different shapes and styles including outdoor and indoor kennels. With indoor kennels it is important to provide proper ventilation and of course to keep it clean to avoid the growth of bacteria. Indoor kennel are suitable only for the smaller breeds and the outdoor kennels are mostly used to house larger breeds.

Dog kennels are perfect to keep your pet safe at night, particularly when they are very young as kennels not only help to provide a warm place for them to curl up, they also help to minimise any ‘accidents’ at night when they tend to run all around the house while others are sleeping.

Whether the dog kennel is of the indoor or the outdoor type or even if they are large and comfortable, one should strive to keep their pet inside them only when needed. It is important to take them out frequently and regularly for long walks and to let them run free if you want a healthy and well behaved dog.

Cheap and variety of dog kennels for sale for sale for your dog’s security. You can find portable dog kennels that are lightweight and easy to install. Though portable dog kennels are very convenient for those who travel frequently with their pets, these portable kennels have their own set of hazards if due attention is not given while selecting the kennels.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Kelvin_Zane
http://EzineArticles.com/?Dog-Kennels—Use-Them-Wisely&id=2876101

While most dogs and their owners shrink from the thought of separation, often other responsibilities bring us away from home. Most individuals will seek out a dog-sitter, or drop their dog off with a friend, but for a privileged few, no expense is spared in the care of their pampered pooches. The comfort and safety of their dogs is considered to be paramount, and it is for such dog owners that the current industry of luxury dog boarding kennels was founded.

Representing one of the most opulent icons of pet-lovers’ devotion to their furry friends, luxury dog boarding kennels host an array of incredible amenities to make dogs under their care feel as comfortable and at ease as possible. Some sport in-house chefs, cooking up fantastic feasts for guests that are tailored to even the most exacting dietary restrictions. Other luxury facilities feature extensive indoor playrooms, stocked with exercise and agility equipment, along with televisions and a selection of DVDs for away-from-home canines to watch. All have an army of in-house care and veterinary staff, available 24-hours a day to tend to a doggie’s every need, providing supervision and nightly turndown service. Some of the fanciest dog boarding kennels even feature a masseuse!

While such amenities may make luxury dog boarding kennels seem like a live-in paradise, comfort comes at a considerable price. Prices range from anywhere between $30 and $80 per night for most luxury dog boarding kennels, and that’s only for the standard rooms! At Manhattan’s Ritzy Canine Carriage House, accommodations in the private Presidential Suite cost a whopping $175 per night. Grooming and massages at such kennels are hardly cheap either: Ritzy Canine charges $60 for an hour-long massage, on top of any grooming or boarding fees.

If the pricey services and deluxe accommodations haven’t made it immediately apparent, luxury dog boarding kennels are not a service for everyone. For those who can afford them however, they provide an unparalleled experience for pooches sad to be left away from home.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Doug_Pierce
http://EzineArticles.com/?Luxury-Dog-Boarding-Kennels—Living-in-the-Lap-of-Luxury&id=5184494

For those who have chosen that it is the perfect time to cut costs by pet grooming your own canine friend, then you will be not by yourself. Numerous canine owners are taking this step in order to save time as well as to spend less. However, even though trimming a pet’s coat just isn’t complex, it certainly is not any situation that should really be taken easily. The goal of any dog’s layer or perhaps hair is to give a covering of basic safety as well as comfort to your family dog. Some people may think that outside of genes, the dimension or even the fullness from the canine’s layer can be dependent on the pet owner. However, the length of the hair or even the coating from the canine should depend upon its breed of dog, and precisely what is healthy and balanced for that particular kind of puppies.

To illustrate, a number of canines in a natural way do much better having his or her hair a bit lengthy, given that their particular dermis is incredibly sensitive to sunshine. However, there are several dogs which are pretty hypersensitive to temperature. These types of puppies will have to stay as cool and as dried up as possible. As a result, such pet dogs have to be trimmed having a near trim. Having stated this, it is quite vital for pet owners to comprehend that they shouldn’t cut his / her pets far too near the skin. This may result in damage about the tissue, or being clipped far too tight can cause several kinds of pain on your hound.

Therefore, having this mentioned, below are a few ways that canine owners can begin organizing his or her self as well as their pet dogs to get groomed and also cut at your home. Initially, in the event the pet owner has bought young dogs, it should be recommended that the dog owner starts clipping out the animals asap. This can enable the puppy dog to get accustomed to being clipped. Soon enough, your dog can easily figure out how to make a good connection to the clippers. Should the dog owner just obtained a grown-up pet dog from a shelter, then getting the dog used to being clipped may well be a slight challenge. Nevertheless, if for example the dog owner will be mild, in this case the dog will discover how to trust getting groomed to be a advantageous event.

It’s important for pet owners to purchase an honest line of hound trimmers, like Wahl dog clippers. Those trimmers have been proved to be very efficient, and they have been demonstrated to be able to deal with harder clipping tasks. A number of puppies have more challenging and also fuller qualities of coat than others. A sort of canine trimmers such as Wahl dog clippers is the best for most of these proper grooming tasks, for the reason that swifter the hound master can certainly conclude clipping out the doggy, the more encouraging of an experience it is going to be for the canine. Certainly, a dog doesn’t want its owner bearing on it, or regularly raking onto it with noisy shaking trimmers!

If pet owners are doubtful about how much pressure they should employ on their family dog, or in the event that pet owners are insecure about how to run the trimmers over the dog, they can get advice from a expert groomer. The pet groomer is used to practicing with different styles of breeds, and the groomer may be able to help the pet owner out.
